Encaustic Wax, Cut Paper and Mixed Media
Through fourteen years as a commercial photographer, I developed a deep understanding of composition, light, and visual storytelling. After discovering encaustic painting, I have spent the past eighteen years experimenting and refining a distinctive technique that blends my painted paper cuts with the luminous qualities of the wax. My work is whimsical and rooted in storytelling, inviting viewers into imaginative, layered worlds where narrative and texture come together in unexpected ways.
To create my pieces, I begin by painting individual elements with watercolors, inks, or gouache, then carefully cut them out with an X-acto blade. These painted paper cuts are collaged in layers of encaustic wax, building both composition and depth as I work. I often enhance the surface with powdered pigments, oil stick, and touches of silver or gold leaf to add texture and luminosity. Each painting begins with a simple story in my mind. As I work, new thoughts and emotions naturally weave their way into the piece. The perfect imperfection of life, the wonder of childhood, the peace found in nature, and the joys and sorrows that have shaped me all find expression in my process. I believe these experiences—and the emotions they evoke—are what mold us and connect the human spirit.
